Gannon Supreme Court Case Update 2016

The Kansas Supreme Court on May 10, 2016 heard oral arguments on a case that centers on constitutional inequities among school districts in the state. On Feb. 11, 2016, the Kansas Supreme Court gave the Kansas Legislature until June 30, 2016 to solve inequities. In response, the Legislature passed and Gov. Sam Brownback signed Senate Sub. For HB 2655, which the Legislature feels addresses the inequities found in the lawsuit. The court will take the case under advisement and will issue a decision about whether the Legislature's actions have sufficiently solved the inequity issues.

In the Olathe Public Schools, we are actively monitoring the situation in Topeka and are planning business as usual and that school will be in session next year. In addition to monitoring the situation closely, we are committed to the best interests of students, employees and the community.

We will communicate with our families and staff should the district's plan for summer or fall change.
