Legislative Update June 20, 2017

On June 17, Gov. Sam Brownback signed into law a school finance bill. The Kansas Supreme Court ruled in March that school funding in the state was inadequate and gave the Legislature until June 30 to fix the problem. https://kasb.org/nb0615-3/

Legislators worked to find a funding solution and passed legislation earlier in June. This formula would provide some additional money for the Olathe Public Schools.

On June 20, the Supreme Court announced that it would allow the funding formula in the legislation to take effect on July 1 while the court reviews it to make sure it meets Constitutional requirements. https://kasb.org/nb0619-3/

The Court also gave the following deadlines:

  • Both parties are required to submit initial briefs on or before Friday, June 30;
  • The parties will then each have an opportunity to respond to the initial briefs on or before Friday, July 7;
  • The parties are to appear for oral argument on Tuesday, July 18 at 9:00 a.m.

District staff will continue to watch the situation closely and will provide updates with more information once it becomes available.
