Students Read Across OlatheDr. Seuss Celebration Involves Special GuestsStudents across the Olathe district celebrated the birthday of Dr. Seuss (author Theodor Geisel) as part of Read Across America Day, March 2, sponsored by the National Education Association.
Meadow Lane and Cedar Creek elementary schools welcomed the Olathe Northwest High School football team as guest readers. Cedar Creek teachers and students gave the football players unique socks to wear while they read "Fox in Socks." This was the seventh year for the Ravens players to visit elementary schools. "All of the players and all of the children had a wonderful experience," said head coach Todd Dain. "It is pretty cool to have players go out to read in schools where they were read to six years ago." Runningback/linebacker Tristan Opie (pictured below, right) read to students at Meadow Lane. Black Bob Elementary School hosted Board of Education member Harlan Parker (pictured below, left) as he read "Hooray for Diffendoofer Day," dressed as Mr. Lowe, the principal at Diffendoofer School. Students heard Seuss trivia questions during morning announcements, and practiced their estimation skills by guessing how many goldfish crackers were in a bowl.

At Bentwood Elementary, Lily Skinner, Ryan Schwartzkoff and Cole Justice (pictured) enjoyed Dr. Seuss books at one of nine activity stations during the school's Dr. Seuss Day celebration. They were among the first-graders who ate green eggs. At another station, students used black markers to draw the Cat in the Hat's face and top hat, then added a red bow and stripes on the hat with tempera paint.
