Olathe South Student Earns Perfect Scores on ACT, SAT TestsA rigorous high school curriculum and independent study over the summer paid off for Michael Erickson. The Olathe South High School senior scored a perfect score on both the ACT (36) and SAT (1,600) test last October. According to Barbara Erickson, Michael's mother, the advanced math and English classes at Olathe South were a great foundation to build on in Michael's preparation for these national tests. Michael also devoted an hour or more each day last summer in further preparing for the tests through independent study.
Michael doesn't spend all his time studying. He has participated in band, forensics, debate and Student Council. He also is a member of the bowling team and Senior Committee. He has participated in numerous academic competitions, including Kansas City Teachers of Mathematics (KCATM), Pittsburg State Math Relays and the Scholars Bowl. Michael plans to major in math in college. He's been accepted to the University of Kansas but he is waiting to hear from four private schools in which he has applied before he makes his college choice. Phil Clark, principal at Olathe South, said Michael is a curious, witty and versatile young man who is willing to take on different challenges. "He offers an infectious and steady grin that leaves one left to wonder, ‘What could he possibly be thinking,' " Clark said.

"Michael has had some great teachers who have challenged him to work hard to improve not just in math, which has always been his strength, but in English and other areas in which he was not quite as strong," she said.
