Every year, the Olathe School District sets higher goals for student rigor, particularly for its high school students. Every year, the students take on the challenge, increasing their enrollment in advanced courses, gaining more scholarship offers, and filling the classrooms of the district's unique hands-on, college and career preparatory programs called "21st Century" programs, according to a report given to the Board of Education.
Each year, the Olathe District Schools Board of Education reviews the topic of student fees for the coming school year. This year, that discussion took on a particularly somber tone during the board's meeting Feb. 4. As the budget planning process proceeds, raising fees is only one strategy for increasing revenue during a period of slashed state funding for public schools. In adjusting user fees to keep up with expenses, board members recognized the hardship this may place on some families during challenging times.
