Driver's Education

The Olathe Public Schools offer state-approved driver's education courses that meet either in an after-school or summer school format. The program emphasizes defensive driving and the social responsibility of driving. Successful completion of this course, plus additional driving experience, will enable students to obtain a Kansas driver's license if they are 16 years old, or a restricted license if they are 15 years old, once all requirements are met.

After-School Program:

Students must be at least 14.5 years old by the first class. It is recommended that students have their "instructional permit" (IP) from the state of Kansas before starting the class. Priority for enrollment will be given to older students. Driving experience with a parent is recommended prior to the start of class.

Classes are Monday through Thursday (except for non-school days) from 5-7 p.m., with one hour of driving time approximately every other day between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Total classroom and driving time will be no longer than three hours per day.

There will be one session per year at each high school and enrollment is limited to students from that high school. Enrollment will be selected chronologically with the oldest being enrolled first. Any unfilled positions will be taken from other high schools serving oldest students first. It is recommended that students needing additional classroom assistance (reading and/or test-taking) participate in the summer program.

The cost is $235 payable by cash or check (no credit cards) and due at registration prior to the first day of class. Successful completion of the course plus additional driving experience will enable students to obtain a Kansas driver's license or restricted license (depending on their age and length of time they've held a permit).
