Driver's Education

The Olathe Public Schools offer state-approved driver's education courses that meet either in an after-school or summer school format. The program emphasizes defensive driving and the social responsibility of driving. Successful completion of this course, plus additional driving experience, will enable students to obtain a Kansas driver's license if they are 16 years old, or a restricted license if they are 15 years old, once all requirements are met.

After-School Program:

Students must be at least 14.5 years old by the first class. It is recommended that students have their "instructional permit" (IP) from the state of Kansas before starting the class. Priority for enrollment will be given to older students. Driving experience with a parent is recommended prior to the start of class.

Classes are Monday through Thursday (except for non-school days) from 5-7 p.m., with one hour of driving time approximately every other day between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Total classroom and driving time will be no longer than three hours per day.

There will be one session per year at each high school and enrollment is limited to students from that high school. Enrollment will be selected chronologically with the oldest being enrolled first. Any unfilled positions will be taken from other high schools serving oldest students first. It is recommended that students needing additional classroom assistance (reading and/or test-taking) participate in the summer program.

The cost is $235 payable by cash or check (no credit cards) and due at registration prior to the first day of class. Successful completion of the course plus additional driving experience will enable students to obtain a Kansas driver's license or restricted license (depending on their age and length of time they've held a permit).

Summer Programs:

Information for the summer programs can be obtained from high school offices after Spring Break. The first session will take place from May 31 to June 28 and the second session will occur from June 29 to July 28. The district offers morning and afternoon classes at Olathe East, North and South. Enrollment will be open until April 27 and priority is given to the oldest students. Please use the envelope attached to the application and use the U.S. mail system. Applications submitted after April 27 will be considered if space is available.

It is recommended that all students have a current Instructional Permit by the first day of class and some driving experience with a parent.
