The Olathe Public Schools offer state-approved driver's education courses that meet either in an after-school or summer school format. The program emphasizes defensive driving and the social responsibility of driving. Successful completion of this course, plus additional driving experience, will enable students to obtain a Kansas driver's license if they are 16 years old, or a restricted license if they are 15 years old, once all requirements are met.
Summer sessions of driver's education will be offered June 1-25 (Session One) and June 29-July 27 (Session Two) at Olathe East, North and South. The district will offer morning and afternoon classes. Please complete the PDF application below and send with a $35 deposit before April 28. Requests postmarked after April 28 will be filled according to available space.
Students must be at least 14.5 years old by the first class. Students are required to have their "instructional permit" (IP) from the state of Kansas before starting the class. Priority for enrollment will be given to older students.
Classes are Monday through Friday (except for non-school days) from 5-7 p.m., with one hour of driving time approximately every other day between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Total classroom and driving time will be no longer than three hours per day.
There will be one session per year at each high school and enrollment is limited to students from that high school. Enrollment will be selected chronologically with the oldest being enrolled first. Any unfilled positions will be taken from other high schools on a chronological basis. It is recommended that students participate in the summer program if they need additional classroom assistance with reading or test taking.
The cost is $235 payable by cash or check (no credit cards). Successful completion of the course plus additional driving experience will enable students to obtain a Kansas driver's license or restricted license (depending on their age and length of time they've held a permit).
