Elementary (K-4) and Middle School (Grades 5-8)
Summer school for elementary and middle school students will look different this summer. Due to budget constraints and construction activities across the district, summer school will focus on effective and efficient delivery of remedial learning to support specific learners identified by teachers and administrators. Enrichment classes will not be offered this summer. Students in need of remedial assistance will be contacted by the district and invited to attend summer school. Parents will be notified in the spring if their child meets the reading and/or math criteria to attend summer school. Classes will be held June 2-July 2, Monday-Thursday.
The district will continue to explore enrichment learning possibilities for the future. Lists of enrichment activities offered in the metro area will be identified and shared with parents through the district's ePost online bulletin board. This change does not impact the special education Extended School Year (ESY) activities for identified students with special needs.
Driver's education is offered in the summer at Olathe East, Olathe North and Olathe South high schools. Twelve hours of driving experience and 34 hours of classroom instruction are included in each session. Session one is June 2-26 and session two is June 30-July 29. Students must have turned 14 by Jan. 1, 2014 to apply for the 2014 summer program. For more information, call Kraig Taylor at (913) 780-7125.
Weight Training (Grades 6-12)
Weight training is a five-week program open to boys and girls who were enrolled in sixth through 12th grade during the 2013-2014 school year in the Olathe School District. Registration forms and information will be available at all middle schools and high schools in late April or early May 2014. Classes will be held at all high schools and middle schools, four days a week, from June 2 through July 2. Tim Anderson, firstname.lastname@example.org, is director of the summer weights and fitness program.
eAcademy (online learning)
Summer eAcademy will offer 13 courses for advanced placement students. Students with counselor permission may sign up at summer school enrollment night in the spring. Counselors will have information fliers and additional information is available on the eAcademy website (http://departments.olatheschools.com/eacademy/) or by contacting Randy Warner, eAcademy facilitator, (913) 780-7110. Sessions are from June 2 through July 24.
Eligibility for enrollment in the extended school year is individually determined by each student’s IEP team. Contact your child’s IEP case manager if you have questions about your child’s eligibility for ESY. Questions about ESY programs should be directed to Heidi Garza at (913) 780-7329.
