District Students Receive Honors

Olathe East Students Place in National Competition

Olathe East High School recently had 22 students compete at the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) National Competition held in Anaheim, California.

Five students placed in various competitions. 2017 graduates Jacob Chapman and Matthew Miller were ranked in the top 15 in Network Design. Junior Nolan Dean was awarded seventh place in the MOS Excel Competition. Junior Wes Cavanaugh was awarded eighth place in the MOS Word competition. Junior Cole Young placed third and Wes Cavanaugh placed fifth in the Bank On It Accounting Tournament.

This year's national competition was the largest FBLA conference to date with over 13,000 students participating.

Olathe Student Named KC SuperStar Finalist

Brooklyn Anderson, 2017 graduate of Olathe North High School, has been chosen as one of 10 finalists for the KC SuperStar high school singing competition.

The final event will be held Aug. 27 in Yardley Hall at Johnson County Community College. The finalists will be competing for scholarships upward of $10,000. The event will be hosted by Tony Award nominee Megan Hilty.

Olathe North Debate and Forensics Receives Recognition

Several students on the Olathe North High School debate and forensics teams recently received state and national recognition.

The 6A State Speech Championship was hosted by Olathe North where Amy Kaba was named state champion for the Oral Interpretation of Poetry. Reem Atallah was named runner-up for Informative Speaking and Zach Wallentine was the runner-up for Impromptu Speaking.

In June, during the National Speech & Debate Association (NSDA) National Championship, Zach Wallentine finished in the top 10 in Congressional Debate in the House of Representatives. Over 250 students competed in this event and Wallentine was the only Kansan to advance to the finals.
