Brent McCune to Lead Board for Next School Year

July 17, 2017 ~ Brent McCune was elected president of the Olathe Board of Education during the group's regular meeting on July 13. Shannon Wickliffe was elected vice president for the 2017-18 year.

The board also appointed a clerk (Joy Bondurant), deputy clerk (Barbara Behm), treasurer (Merle Hastert) and school attorney (Michael G. Norris of Norris & Keplinger, L.L.C.) for the new fiscal year.

In other business, the board:

  • Approved a consent agenda including meeting minutes, various reports, designating "The Olathe News" as the official newspaper for publication of school notices, student trip, social emotional learning curriculum and assessment resources, 1,116-hour policy for the 2017-18 school year, designating May 25 as an inclement weather day, various appointments and designations, investment institutions for fiscal year 2017-18, resolution for disposal of surplus property, resolution for document destruction, resolution for petty cash funds, resolution for use of district activity funds, and authorization of advance payments of claims.
  • Approved an inter-local agreement with the Olathe Police Department to provide school resource officers for the 2017-18 school year.
  • Approved the student transportation agreement with Assisted Student Transportation Services for a period of three years.
  • Approved an agreement with the City of Olathe to install a traffic signal at 119th Street and Sunnybrook / South Valley Boulevard because of construction of Middle School 10.
  • Approved a proposal for architectural and engineering services for the design of the 2018 middle school entry expansion and renovation projects at Frontier Trail, Indian Trail, Pioneer Trail and Santa Fe Trail.
  • Set a regular meeting schedule of 6 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month in the Education Center. Meeting dates will be Aug. 3, Sept. 7, Oct. 5, Nov. 2, Dec. 7, Jan. 4, 2018, Feb. 1, March 1, April 5, May 3, and June 7. The 2018-19 organizational meeting will be July 12, 2018.
  • Appointed board members to serve with various organizations: Joe Beveridge with the Head Start Policy Council, Amy Martin with the Olathe Public Schools Foundation board, Amy Martin with the Kansas Association of School Boards (KASB) Governmental Relations Network, Joe Beveridge with the KASB Legislative Committee for 2017-20, and Rick Schier to serve as KASB Board of Directors Region 15 vice president for 2017-20.
  • Approved submitting an application to the Kansas Can School Redesign Project.
  • Received information on future action items including construction management proposal for Elementary School 36, welding exhaust equipment upgrades at Olathe Advanced Technical Center, instructional materials and curriculum, textbooks and a student trip.
  • Received the Head Start director's monthly report, end-of-year Site Council evaluation, and report of unencumbered cash balances as of July 1, 2017.
  • Held an executive session to discuss personnel matters, consult with the board's attorney, and discuss employer-employee negotiations.
