Board Approves Special Budget Meeting, Recognizes Achievement

Aug. 4, 2017 ~ The 2017-18 budget was the primary focus of the Olathe Board of Education meeting on Aug. 3.

Chief Financial and Operations Officer John Hutchison shared preliminary information with board members. Hutchison discussed key information and considerations pertaining to the budget for the upcoming year.

After the presentation, the agenda was amended to take action on two items. The board:

  • Approved the Notice of Hearing for publication in the Olathe News on Saturday, Aug.12
  • Approved a special board meeting Aug. 24 following the district's budget hearing at 6 p.m., to make final modifications and approve the state budget documents for certification to the county and Kansas State Department of Education.


  • Six Olathe teachers participated in summer externships with area businesses. The teachers and their business partners were: Stephanie Dupree of Olathe South High School at The Rub and The Tasteful Olive, Robyn Eick of Olathe North High School at Hy-Vee Grocery, Brandon Hernandez of Olathe Northwest High School at Burns & McDonnell, Jordan Landis of Olathe Northwest at Groover Interior Design and Finkle & Williams Architecture, Amy Nail of Olathe North at Johnson County Department of Health and Environment, and Jessica Collins of Olathe Northwest at Cocoa Dolce and Kansas Coffee Café.
  • Several students earned top honors in the Kansas 6A speech championships. Austin Shively of Olathe Northwest is the state champion in Dramatic Interpretation. Amy Kaba of Olathe North is the Speech champion. Reem Atallah of Olathe North was runner-up in Informative Speech and Zach Wallentine of Olathe North was runner up in Impromptu Speech. He also finished in the top 10 in the Congressional Debate.
  • The Olathe Northwest softball team won the 6A state championship.
  • Several 6A state track champions are from Olathe schools. Dana Baker of Olathe North won the javelin and Bailey Turner of Olathe East won the long jump. Brandon Clark of Olathe North won the 800m and Julian Lacey of Olathe Northwest won the 400m. Maddie Righter of Olathe Northwest won the high jump and Rachael Mayberry of Olathe Northwest won the pole vault. Olathe South High School's Robert Adger III, Nolan McKay, Emmanuel Okwuone and Cameron Waldo won the 4x400m relay.

In other business, the board:

  • Approved a consent agenda including meeting minutes, reports, student trip, instructional materials, curriculum and textbooks.
  • Accepted the pool contractor proposal for Middle School 10. (2016 bond funds)
  • Approved a construction change orders in excess of $20,000 for Middle School 10. (2016 bond funds)
  • Approved bids for Cisco phones to update existing phone systems districtwide. (2016 bond funds)
  • Approved bids for television studio equipment and accessories for Olathe West High School. (2016 bond funds)
  • Approved the bid to upgrade the welding exhaust equipment at Olathe Advanced Technical Center. (capital outlay funds)
  • Approved deeding a 38.5-foot-wide strip of land on the east side of Olathe Northwest's property to the adjacent landowner to resolve an apparent error in paperwork dating back to the district's purchase of the land.
  • Approved board member committee assignments and school site council assignments for 2017-18.
  • Received information about future action items including MacBook Air laptops for Olathe East and Olathe North, iMac computers for Olathe South, food service recycling equipment for Olathe West, construction management proposal for the 2018 middle school entry expansion and renovation projects, bidding for mechanical control upgrades at Olathe Northwest, and bids for remote-controlled motorized blinds for skylight windows in the greenhouses at Olathe East, South and Northwest.
  • Held an executive session to discuss employer-employee negotiations and included consulting with an attorney.
