Board Approves 2017-18 Budget

Aug. 25, 2017 ~ At a special meeting of the Olathe Board of Education on Thursday, the board approved the 2017-18 budget, following a public budget hearing.

Chief Financial and Operations Officer John Hutchison shared preliminary information with board members. Hutchison discussed key information and considerations pertaining to the budget for the upcoming year.

The budget includes a 2.976 mill increase in 2017-18. The 2.976 mill increase accounts for the utilization of special BOTA funding to open Olathe West High School. This mill increase is similar to the mill increase that occurred when Olathe Northwest opened in 2003. Under Kansas statute, BOTA funding is available to districts to assist with operating expenses when a new school opens. This funding stream is only available for three years when a new facility opens and the amount that districts can assess decreases each year.
