Serving Others is Goal of Bulldog Service Day

Oct. 27, 2017 ~ On Oct.18, California Trail Middle School students collectively got their hands dirty to help others in the greater Kansas City area. As it was a half day for students due to parent-teacher conferences, each one of California Trail's 734 students were dispatched to a community organization to volunteer and give back to the community.

Teachers Tracy Dickerson, Sherry Wann and Rachel Hoyer logged many hours in order to orchestrate this day for Bulldog students. The three teachers contacted each organization, compiled their needs, calculated how many students and staff could go to each location, created an online student sign-up and coordinated transportation for the student volunteers.

"This has been a huge project to put together. We wanted to get the kids involved on the ground level of these service projects rather than just have them donate money," Wann said. "I am excited to see this day in action. It is exciting that the students get to have such a large impact on our city."

The goal was to create experiences for students and help them realize the outreach opportunities available throughout their community.

"I am so excited each of our students will be involved, in a hands-on manner, serving others," California Trail Principal Mike Wiley said. "This opportunity will educate our students on the many needs in our community at large, they will experience the joy of helping others and understand that even at their age, they can make a positive impact!"

Students volunteered at 17 locations including Wayside Waifs, Harvesters, Great Plains SPCA, Bickford Senior Living, Olathe Parks and Recreation and New Hope food pantry.
